The Road Ahead: Living with a Living Framework
The AI RMF isn’t static. NIST designed it as a “living document” that will evolve as AI technologies advance, new risks emerge, and the community gains implementation experience.
In July 2024, NIST released the Generative AI Profile, a companion document addressing unique risks posed by large language models and other generative AI technologies. This profile demonstrates the framework’s adaptability—core principles remain constant while specific guidance evolves to address new AI paradigms.
NIST plans formal reviews with community input, with the first major review expected no later than 2028. But updates to supporting resources like the AI RMF Playbook happen more frequently, incorporating community feedback and emerging best practices on a semi-annual basis.
The framework also includes a roadmap for future development, highlighting priorities like:
Alignment with international AI standards as they emerge
Expanded guidance on testing, evaluation, verification, and validation (TEVV)
Development of sector-specific and use-case-specific profiles
Research on balancing trade-offs between trustworthy AI characteristics

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework doesn’t make AI risk management easy—that would be impossible given the genuine complexity of these challenges. But it does make it manageable. It provides structure where there was chaos, a common language where there was confusion, and practical guidance where there were only abstract principles.
As AI systems become more powerful and more prevalent, the question isn’t whether to manage AI risks—it’s whether you’ll do so thoughtfully and systematically, or reactively and haphazardly.
