SOC 2 compliance affects cyber liability insurance significantly since organizations holding a current SOC 2 Type 2 Report demonstrate to insurers that security controls have been independently tested and verified, reducing underwriting risk. This typically translates to improved eligibility for coverage, as some insurers decline or limit coverage for organizations without demonstrable security controls; reduced premiums relative to comparable organizations without independent security assurance; and higher coverage limits for organizations with verified control environments. An increasing number of cyber insurers either require SOC 2 compliance for certain coverage tiers or offer premium discounts, typically 10–25%, for organizations providing a current Type 2 Report. Organizations pursuing SOC 2 should notify their insurance broker before and after the examination to capture the premium impact.
Does a SOC 2 Type 1 Report satisfy cyber liability insurance underwriters?
Many cyber liability insurers prefer or require a Type 2 Report because it demonstrates operational effectiveness of controls over time, not just their design at a point in time. A Type 1 Report signals that controls exist and are designed correctly but does not confirm consistent operation, which is the primary concern of an insurer assessing breach probability. Organizations using a Type 1 Report to support an insurance application should disclose that a Type 2 examination is in progress and provide an expected completion date. Some insurers accept a Type 1 for an interim policy period with the expectation that a Type 2 Report is provided at renewal.
